4ELIT007X – Art and Society

This course is an introduction to the visual culture of London, including painting, sculpture, photography, and contemporary media. The course will use examples of London’s major art galleries to examine how artworks, exhibitions, and cultural organizations can be understood within wider social contexts.

The sessions will focus on collections from museums, such as the British Museum, as well as artworks from art galleries such as National Gallery and Tate Modern. The classes will explore how these institutions reveal the complex cultural identity and history of London. The module develops students’ skills in visual analysis and critical thinking about culture.

4CRIM005X – Crime and London Underworld

The module explores London and its criminal areas from the earliest times and changing nature of London’s criminal ‘underworld’ from modernity to late modernity. Notorious criminal families, as well as colorful underworld characters, will be explored. Finally, the emergence of specialized law enforcement agencies to deal with this newly discovered threat will also be considered.

4IMAG012X  – Photographing the City: London

This course is concerned with an investigation of the city as represented through historical and contemporary photography. Using London as an example, through a series of lectures and seminars students gain a critical perspective on the city as a social, cultural, architectural, and artistic phenomenon. By following a taught research and development process, via workshops, photographic exercises, and tutorials, they focus on their own photographic project.

4CLST001X – Working Across Cultures in a Global World

The course aims to support the development of students’ communicative skills, intercultural competence, and diversity consciousness, necessary to effectively operate in a globalized professional arena. They will be given a chance to familiarise themselves with relevant theoretical and methodological approaches in the area of intercultural professional communication, which will further allow them to reflect on their current knowledge and understanding of issues in communication and interculturality in a structured and systematic way and develop deeper insights into their interdependence. The course also contains an introspective element during which students are encouraged to reflect on their own cultural outlook.
