Module: Magic, Murder, & Mystery in London Literature

London is a global icon. But how do we receive this icon, and how has it been made? In part, the idea of London has been—and continues to be—constituted by its literary reflection. From the dirty underbelly of Charles Dickens’ imaginary; to the squirming mass unfurling under Sherlock Holmes’ magnified gaze; to the corporate peel around Harry Potter’s magical world, London comes to us through a haze of Magic, Murder, and Mystery. In this module, students will be given the opportunity to unpick London’s complex literary past—and present. You will be guided by tutor-led lectures and whole-class discussion through London’s museums via the late-Victorian vogue for mummy fiction; through the terrorised London of Jack the Ripper; through the “queer magic” of 20th-century fiction of the Capital, and more. At the end of the module, you will provide your own written response to the iconography of London as it presents itself in your chosen texts.

Module: Londonopolis – Exploring the Global City

This module will combine contemporary theories and debates on the condition of urban life in a global city with virtual ethnographic, street level perspective experienced and then conceptualized by students. The idea is to continuously relate theories from urban anthropology, sociology and urban studies with dynamic reality ‘out-there’ directly confronted by students. The aim of the module is to generate discussions on the interplay between culture and structure, economy and society, urban landscape and human behaviour using phenomena, data, images, observations gathered by students during virtual field trips, which are the integral part of the teaching tool.

London is undoubtedly one of the global cities that offer a unique experience of social diversity. For many international students life in London is part of their education trajectory per se and this module aims at introducing this assumption through a study exploring various aspects and trends in contemporary global cities.

Module: Gods and Heroes in Classical Mythology

The topics to be studied on this course include the enduringly intriguing Achilles and Odysseus and their pursuits in the Trojan War, Herakles and his twelve labours, and Aeneas on his journey to found Rome. We will also examine key members of the Olympian Pantheon such as Zeus, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite and discuss how their actions intertwine with the heroes of Ancient Greece and Rome. We will explore the role of these and other personages in some of the most important works of literature from Greece and Rome, including Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Sophocles’ Ajax, Euripides Herakles, Virgil’s Aeneid and Ovid’s Metamorphoses. We will also consider their rich ‘afterlife’ in the postclassical world down to the present day with sessions exploring their portrayals in modern day film and literature.

Why Virtual Life in London

A hotspot for art, fashion, film, history, music, theater, and nightlife, London is an experience in itself – even from across the pond! Taking online courses in London will have you planning your next possible trip there, whether that includes a cruise down the River Thames or finding a rooftop with a sweeping view of the city below

You’ll deepen your connection to London with our Virtual La Vida Local program, filled with self-guided and group activities so you can get a taste of life in the home of Big Ben and the House of Parliament. Beef up your knowledge of the Beatles’ entire catalog or see what football is all about. Familiarizing yourself with the London Underground (aka “the Tube”), the oldest underground railway in the world, will set you up for success once you get your feet on the city streets. As the saying goes, coined by famous author Samuel Johnson, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”
