Top Eight Most Romantic Cities

This post was contributed by Amanda Zetah – student at Colorado State University, world-traveler and travel writer.

With Valentine’s Day upon us, it is hard not to start thinking about how you are going to celebrate. It doesn’t matter if you are single or taken, Valentine’s Day is a big holiday for everyone. Just because most people go out to dinner and a movie doesn’t mean you can’t have the adventure of your life! Here are the top eight most romantic cities all around the globe. Grab your suitcase, passport, and get on your way with your significant other in tow!

8. Wellington, New Zealand

New Zealand is known as the adventure capital of the world with a bunch of extreme sports available for you adrenaline junkies out there. Visit the town where Lord of the Rings was shot, then go hiking around the island to see the beautiful landscape. Kayak around the North Island or try zorbing, a fun new sport where you roll down a hill inside a clear, plastic ball. Either way, it is the perfect destination for the couple that isn’t afraid to try new things — whether it is jumping out of a plane, running around in a plastic ball, or kayaking around.

7. Quito, Ecuador

Going to Ecuador would be the perfect trip for the couple that wants to practice their Spanish. Spend a romantic day hiking around the Andes mountains and then enjoy local cuisine lounging by the beach. There are crater lakes to explore, as well as the jungle for some animal sightings. Either way, this trip is for the more outdoorsy couple to enjoy.

6. Rome, Italy

European cities are seen as the most romantic, and for good reason! It’s no coincidence that the majority of our romantic comedies are shot in this beautiful country. Rome is home to an interesting history and delicious food — spend the day with your loved one touring the Vatican and exploring the Colosseum. Then, take a train out to Tuscany for a fancy dinner with wine from a local vineyard. Sample some fresh pasta carbonara or homemade pizza al fresco! Top everything off with some delicious Nutella gelato and you’ve got the perfect Valentine’s Day trip.

5. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague has exciting nightlife and an even more exciting exchange rate! Hit the town with only a few koruna in hand and you’re sure to have a good time. Stop by the ice bar and cuddle up next to your significant other after a day of sightseeing. The historic architecture and art scene in Prague are absolutely to die for — don’t forget to snap some pictures!

4. Cape Town, South Africa

If you are a more adventurous couple that loves animals, Cape Town is the perfect destination for your Valentine’s Day date. Go on a safari in one of the neighboring National Parks where you can ride an ostrich, visit a colony of penguins, witness feeding time for lions, or romp around with some elephants. Sample some of the delicious wine from the Cape Winelands after learning to sail with the local yacht club. Either way, this destination has more than enough activities to provide a couple looking for an exciting adventure.

3. London, England

Cuddle up next to your loved one while you sip English breakfast tea in a nearby coffee shop in London. Ride the Tube around the city while sightseeing all day. There’s more than enough to see including Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, Abbey Road, and more! Finish up the day with some fish and chips and a Shakespeare play at the Globe Theater. Or, sample the night life by traveling down to Piccadilly Circus.

2. Cuernavaca, Mexico

The unique colonial town of Cuernavaca offers so much to the Spanish-speaking couple! It was nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring” because temperatures stay at a balmy 70 degrees. Enjoy the beaches of Acapulco and take a cooking class at night to make your loved one some delicious and authentic Mexican food.

1. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona has got to be one of the most romantic cities in the entire world. Spend the day practicing your Catalan with the locals, soak up some sun on the white sandy beaches, and take a nice siesta with your significant other. After your nap, head to the nearest tapas bar for a light bite to eat or go for the more hearty plate of paella. The night can be spent learning the secrets of flamenco dancing. It is the perfect Mediterranean city to spend the holiday, simply because it is so vibrant and breathtaking!
