NORTHAMPTON, MA – This year, St. Cloud State University (SCSU) was the recipient of the 2019 Going Places Award, presented by CISabroad – Center for International Studies, a partner organization who provides U.S. university students with the best value in education abroad, considering affordability, academic relevance, cultural immersion, and support. The purpose of the award is to recognize an institution who broadens academic perspectives, encourages student development, and broadens global awareness through their innovative work in education abroad. The Going Places Award is announced each year at the NAFSA Annual Conference & Expo, which brings together 10,000 international education professionals from 3,500 institutions and organizations from more than 100 different countries. The 2019 conference was held in Washington, D.C. Attendees from St. Cloud State University included President Robbyn Wacker and staff from the education abroad team, Shahzad Ahmad, Jacob Kinning, and Rachael Gardner.
St. Cloud State University offers a diverse and robust portfolio of global academic programs, available to St. Cloud State students and students from other Minnesota state institutions. The university also provides opportunities for staff, faculty, alumni, and university leadership to engage with global and cultural learning experiences. The partnership between St. Cloud State and CISabroad creates pathways for students from various disciplines to choose from 120 programs in 22 different countries where they can study and intern abroad on short-term and semester programs. The partnership also creates opportunities for the university to develop and customize programs in one or more of 50+ countries.
“We are honored to receive this award. This award is so meaningful because at the end of the day, it’s about the students,” Jacob Kinning, SCSU Assistant Director of Education Abroad, said. “CISabroad’s commitment to making education abroad accessible to everyone is what we are drawn to the most. The work they do is a reflection of what we do. We know if our students or faculty are with CISabroad, they’ll be safe, they’ll learn, they’ll integrate with the local culture, and they’ll be cared for as if they were on a SCSU program.”
CISabroad has hosted St. Cloud State University students on study and intern programs in Australia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, France, Ghana, Hawai’i, Italy, Spain, and Thailand. The organizations have also collaborated on multi-country faculty-led programs for the Business and Education schools. At the 2018 Region IV NAFSA Conference in Duluth, MN, St. Cloud State’s education abroad team presented alongside CISabroad on different program models and how developing first-year experience programs can be used as a strategic enrollment management technique in higher education.
