Top 3 Subjects to Study in Lima, Peru

Lima...the center of life in Peru! The capital and largest city with a population of nearly 10 million people, maintains the energetic pulse of Peru. A semester in Lima will take you out of the classroom and give you practical knowledge and understanding no matter what class you decide to take. CISabroad offers classes in both Spanish or English, with a wide variety of available subjects to study. Spanish is still the best subject to study while in Peru, but if you’re looking to go beyond language learning during your semester abroad, these are the three subjects we recommend.

Architecture & Urban Planning
Architecture throughout Lima is a unique mix of styles, from the early colonial styles to Spanish Baroque, Spanish Neoclassicism, and a very obvious French influence coupled with the growth and development of a modern city. Old and new exist in harmony where an afternoon stroll easily turns into a history lesson for students studying architecture in Lima. The city has grown so much in such a short time and it provides the perfect case study for students of architecture and urban planning. You’ll learn from top local experts in the field who understand the unique problems Lima faces, working side by side to come up with practical solutions.

Tourism Management
Lima is the primary point of entry into Peru, and as tourism in Peru developed so has the industry in Lima. From its beaches to its historic city center- a UNESCO World Heritage Site, archeological sites, museums, nightlife, food tourism, festivals and local traditions, Lima provides plenty of opportunities to apply lessons learned outside of the classroom. Classes in tourism management will focus on Peruvian tourism and the application of traditional marketing and management practices to the tourism industry. Students will also learn strategic planning processes and strategies for the tourism sector and get an inside look at the industry as they live and experience Peru first as a tourist, and eventually as a local.

Gastronomy & Culinary Arts
For the foodie looking to go pro, Lima is the perfect place to study gastronomy and culinary arts. Named the Gastronomical Capital of the Americas, Lima lives up to the name with a constantly evolving food culture famous for its spanish fusions. Historically, immigration played a huge role in the evolution of food culture in Peru and worldwide. Flavors from all over the world come together in Lima, blending with traditional Peruvian dishes to create an entirely new experience. With CISabroad you’ll learn the history of gastronomy, the heritage and culture of gastronomy, and the basics of the culinary arts during a semester in Peru.

For the architect, career traveler, and foodie, a semester in Lima is ideal. Professors are local experts in their field sharing their knowledge and personal wisdom, and students will be able to learn more about their host country in the context of these subject areas. Together, these three subjects create an experience. During a semester in Lima, mix and match classes in architecture and urban planning, tourism management, and gastronomy, to create a full picture of Peru during your semester with CISabroad.
