Costa Rica, which translates as “rich coast,” is bordered by both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and has hundreds of miles of beautiful shoreline. And nearly a quarter of the country is protected as national parks. Rain forests, rivers, and volcanoes fill the interior of the country with diverse wildlife, and adventure opportunities abound (tread lightly!). On Semester in Costa Rica you will be integrated with local Costa Ricans, aka Ticos, known for their friendly, laid-back demeanor. Your university is located in San Jose, the cultural hub of Costa Rica, famed for its National Theater, busy market life, and easy-to-use public transportation. There are plenty of international restaurants, ranging from Lebanese to Italian, in addition to local sodas, where you can eat large helpings of gallo pinto, the delicious national dish. After class, you can head to one of the many local theaters, concert venues, cinemas, and salsa clubs.
