The 2 letters of the course code indicate the subject area to which the course, or module, belongs. The first 3 numbers indicate the course itself, and the last number indicates the semester in which it is normally taken. For example, year 1 modules end in 1 (fall semester) and 2 (spring semester); year 2 modules end in 3 (fall) and 4 (spring ), year 3 modules end in 5 (fall) and 6 (spring), and so on. The 3-digit codes that follow the module titles represent the required number of corresponding lecture, tutorial, and laboratory hours, respectively.

For example:

HI4053 Ireland: 1750-1850 (2-1-0) is a History course, number 405, to be taken in the third semester, i.e. the fall of the second year. There are 2 lecture hours and 1 tutorial hour per week.
