January in Aix-en-Provence is an opportunity to explore and engage with the vibrant culture of southern France. Whether it’s improving your French language skills or seeking to pick up an elective course, IAU College offers an array of J-term course options. All the while you’ll have the opportunity to maximize your cultural experience by living with a local French family engaging with the charming Mediterranean culture of Aix-en-Provence and surrounding cities.

Aix-en-Provence is both quaint in size full of activities for leisure and exploratory learning. Live within walking distance of libraries, museums, churches, bookstores, markets, cafès, cinemas, restaurants, discothëques, and sports facilities. With its moderate Mediterranean climate, beautiful scenery, and undeniable charm, January in Aix-en-Provence offers a tremendous opportunity to get a taste of French culture.

Well-known as the city of art and lights,  Aix-en-Provence is a city in southern France, situated about 30 km north to Marseille. Famous for its superb preservation of architecture, it is home to the upper-class and surrounded by magnificent monuments.

Built and developed around art and culture, Aix-en-Provence is at the center of one of France's most important tourist regions. Located in the heart of Provence, it is a wonderful starting-point for people to explore many places of interest, all within an hour's drive.

January in Aix en Provence will be spent at IAU College, one of the oldest study abroad sites in Europe. IAU provides the backdrop for your study during your time in France. The school’s location in the beautiful old section of Aix en Provence gives you an amazing historic background for your studying and free time. IAU’s supportive staff will make sure you love your time in Aix en Provence!

Do you want to make the most of your January program? Your orientation on campus will provide you with tips about making the most of your expereince in Aix en Provence. With a tour of the city you will quickly learn the best cafes for chocolat chaud. 

Additional IAU staff from the office of Student life on campus, offers academic and access to activities open to international students.

Homestay with local families within easy walking distance of the program. Your homestay will provide daily breakfast and six dinners per week.

During your J-term, you will be living in a home with a French family. This home stay will be a key component of assimilating to life in Aix en Provence. Your host families have been carefully selected, and many of them have hosted American students for several years. Many of the homes are a 15 to 35-minute walk to your courses on campus. You may choose a single or a double bedroom, daily breakfast and six dinners per week are included. Your host family will provide bed linens, pillows, and blankets for you to use, although you will need to bring your own towel. Your room will be cleaned each week, and you will usually be provided with one load of laundry per week. There is also generally Internet access at the home, and you’ll have access to Internet in cafés around the city. After studying abroad, many students report that home stays are their favorite part of the experience. You’ll become a part of the family, be able to improve your French, and get insiders tips for how best to enjoy Aix en Provence!
